Yes, our children will have a constructive and educational urban day camp experience because of your generosity. Thank you for contributing to our special campaign in honor of Sister Patrice and the camp mailing. We are pleased to say that we reached our goal of raising $15,000! Your donation will allow more than 116 children to have the opportunity to “make new friends” as well as to participate in safe, adult-directed programs that will promote individual growth and team building behaviors. Hello/Good bye to Executive Directors

On May 18, Agape Community Center welcomed Ms. Ann Bachrach as the new Executive Director. She will replace Sister Patrice Colletti, SDS on June 1, as Sister Patrice was asked to take a national position in service to the Sisters of the Divine Savior starting in June. (Sister Patrice on her scooter at right).

Ms. Ann (below) has a strong background that includes human resources, finance/accounting, management, planning, and small business ownership. She previously worked for Ministry Health Care in the Supply Chain department. Prior to that, she worked for a manufacturing company. Ann brings lots of energy and a real interest in building on the wonderful work that Agape's staff and community members have created!

Please stop by to welcome Ann Bachrach, and to say "good bye!" to Sister Patrice at our special community meal on May 21, 2009 at 5 pm at Agape Community Center. All are welcome!

Clean Hands

Since April 28, Agape Community Center has been on "Phase 1" of our Contagious Disease Response Plan. This three-phase plan coordinates efforts to ensure our appropriate role in preventing and responding to our current influenza outbreak. "Phase 1" means we are paying special attention to implementing, and teaching our participants to implement, appropriate cautionary procedures. The most important? "Wash your hands. Wash your hands. Wash your hands."

During Phase 1, we make very sure any staff member or participant who might not feel well stays home. We share information with the public through our health education, youth, teen and adult programming. Our free clinic remains open, as do all our other programs. Our staff members communicate with families directly if they have children enrolled in schools which might be closed so that students from those schools remain at home rather than coming to the Center.

During Phase 1, our staff members are also required to review procedures and plans in case it might be necessary to move into "Phase 2" (no programming) or "Phase 3" (closed.) Our goal is to be an effective part of our city's response to contagious disease. Please, give us a call if you have questions.

And, clearly, if you or your child are ill, please stay at home and contact your doctor.

Mambo to Your Neighborhood Center!

May 1, 2009: Neighbors from the area are coming together for a "May Day Mambo" event that includes bingo, delicious food, and dancing!

The event is being organized by the Community Advisory Board for the entire neighborhood. It is open to the public, with tickets priced at $1, $2, or a whole family for $5. The Community Advisory Board is raising funds for adult programming.

We hope you can mambo your way down the block to join the group! The fun starts at 4 pm and goes until 8 pm! You can pre-purchase tickets, or buy them at the door!

Hunger Task Force Awards "Excellent" Ranking

After an on-site inspection, Hunger Task Force rated Agape Community Center with a "four star" top rating (four out of four) for compliance with their Standards of Excellence. Their rating indicated that Agape "has a great volunteer base and different groups provide meals for the program each night."

The site surveyor also noted that Agape Community Center's community meal, held each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening at 5:30 pm, has "a comfortable and open feeling... and meals are served family style."

With sad hearts, we say "adios" to our friend and colleague, Ms. Lynette Eubanks. After eight years as part of the Agape Community Center family, Lynette will be moving on to a new, exciting job in Madison, WI. We will miss her smile, her laughter, her love, her caring, and her deep sense of commitment.

Celebrating Diversity - Women Arise!

In honor of International Women's Day on March 20, 2009, Agape Community Center held a luncheon to honor 6 distinguished women in our community.

Those in honor were Dr. Leah Ardnt who serves as a Clinical and Mental Health consultant to the Milwaukee Police Department's Police Officer Support Team.

Janice Brazil Cummings who serves as the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Department of Juctice / Office of Crime Victim Services.

Dolly Grimes-Johnson who, for 25 years, served as the shelter Manager at Sojourner Truth House, a program for battered women and their children.

August Marie Wanger-Richardson, a young advocate who effortlessly encourages everyone around her to do the best they can do, and never settle for less.

Vera Pina who works as a Mental Health Consultant and Therapist with poverty stricken families at LaCausa Treatment Center.

Marge Singer Poker, wife of a POW, mother, volunteer, and life long learner, at age 82 graduated in December 2008 with an Associated Degree in Applied Science in Human Services.

These 6 women are role models in our community who inspire us to stand up for what we believe and to never give up. The luncheon was an a wonderful tribute to woman who will touch our lives forever.

Art Club Every Friday

We have an "art club" in the After School Program. The After School Program is for youth ages 7-13. Next year, we hope to go from ages 6-13, providing age appropriate hands-on, interactive gym, recreational, arts, and learning activities in small groups. This story is written by kids from the art club.

We made drawings of African masks. We used chalk and pastels. We learned how to blend chalk and pastels. We learned how to find the right shape for the picture.

This art project is part of our Art Club. We do a different project every Friday. It is a lot of fun. We made other things too. We made embellished crosses. We also made clay but that was with the nurses for the health fair in April. The clay was vegetables and food to teach about healthy eating.

Bake Sale at Stritch University Raises Funds for Agape

The business students and SIFE Club at Cardinal Stritch University organized and hosted a bake sale and raffle at Cardinal Stritch University on March 11, 2009, with over $400 in proceeds to benefit the Youth and Intergenerational Programming at Agape Community Center!

Dr. Kamdar's Advertising and Marketing Classes, plus students participating in the club called Students Involved in Free Enterprise (SIFE) have adopted Agape Community Center as part of their spring semester activities. In addition to the friend-raising/ fundraising bake sale, these energetic undergraduate students are working on a variety of marketing activities to invite youth (7-13 year olds) and others to the exciting activities offered at our Center.

Baked items were donated by members of Agape's Community Advisory Board, several Sisters of the Divine Savior, and students and faculty at Stritch.

Thanks to these students- and to all who purchased these delectible treats!

Hey, Neighbors! Here's a little bit of good news in the "looking for a job" department! AGAPE COMMUNITY CENTER is seeking two motivated, mature, physically capable employees to cover daily and weekend maintenance, cleaning, janitorial, repair, and building security functions.

These two positions, along with Housekeeping, form a team, which is responsible for our Center being clean, safe, and fully ready to serve for all programming activities and community weekend rentals.

These are part time positions, 15 to 20 hours per week. One is in the morning, plus weekend hours; the other is in the evening, plus weekend hours. Wage range: $8.50-$10.00/hr depending on prior experience and skill set.

You can pick up an APPLICATION PACKET, including a job description with the specifics by stopping by the Center between 9 am and 6 pm, M-F. The position requires a criminal background check (but having a criminal background will not automatically exclude you from consideration). You will need to be drug/alcohol free.

Family Fun Night this month was RED in almost every way! Families gathered at Agape Community Center to make handmade Valentine's Day cards and tasty treats.

Family Fun Nights occur every month, and are led by Ms. Lynette Eubanks. What a wonderful opportunity for intergenerational sharing and learning! Participants always come away with a special item and, often, a new friend or two!

Bucks Francisco Elson Gives 70 Tix to Agape Community

Monday was cold outside, but inside the Bradley Center, the scene was hot as the Milwaukee Bucks took on the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Although the Bucks lost, we had a terrific time. Our "Agape Community Center Night at the Bucks" was sponsored by Number 9 Francisco Elson.

We even had an opportunity to say thanks to him on the "jumbo-tron" hanging above center court!

Agape's own Ryan and Brian teamed up to provide an excellent sixty-second interview captured on camera for the entire Arena to see! Not only did they explain to the audience that Agape Community Center has a profound influence on the vitality of our neighborhood, they also thanked Mr. Elson personally for making the night possible. They did an awesome job! Do these guys have television in their career future??

A New Generation of Drivers Hits the Road

On January 26th, 12 teen participants earned their learning permits, which enables them to begin behind the wheel driving practice. The program is a collaborative effort between Silver Spring Neighborhood Center and Agape Community Center.

The 3 week program runs Monday to Friday from 6-8pm and is facilitated by Easy Method Driving School.

Prior to admittance into the program, teens must meet specific criteria, such as maintaining a GPA of 2.3 or higher, be an active participant at either community center, provide proof of 25 hours community service and be considered an outstanding role model for their peers.

Nearly 200 neighbors gathered to celebrate history and to share a community meal in honor of our new president, President Barack Obama. Most had watched the Inauguration Ceremony earlier in the day, many with tears of joy, and tonight, gathered together to talk about their experiences, share some of their own personal reflections, and reflect on the meaning of the day.

The Mount Mary College in the Community Program (MMCIC) is offering a way to earn 10.5 college credits for only $30. New Grant Funds Youth Art Workshop

Colors, shapes, perspective, shading.... Planning, experimenting, creating..... paint, crayon, ink, chalk...

Each Friday, starting in January, our "Rising Stars" in our After School Program are painting, drawing, and learning art skills in an intensive, fun-filled, hands-on art workshop funded through a new grant through the United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee (UNCOM).

Agape's artists, ages 6-13, are producing various original art works which will become part of a special art exhibit, open to the public! Stay tuned for when and where you can view our local talent, and watch for the new Picassos among us!

"It's Like We're Family..."

Brian Taylor, 16 of Berryland has been a participant of Agape Community Center's After-School Program since he was 12 years old. His family moved into Berryland when he was 11.
When asked what keeps him coming back after all these years, Brian proclaims "I enjoy the staff, there are good people here who care about me...and it's fun", he says with a shy grin.

When inquired as to what some of his favorite activities are in Teen Scene (the teen portion of the After-School Program for youth ages 13-19) Brian answers "I like basketball, but I'm not huge on it, so I'd have to say the computer lessons and open lab time. But honestly, above all the activities, I just like hanging out with the people here...both kids and staff."

As for what Brian Taylor would like to see happen at Agape within the next year: "New blood! More people should come to the center. Oh, and a football league for teens!"

After School Program Goes to the Ballet

On Tuesday, December 23rd, youth participants of the After-School Program visited the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts to watch the Nutcracker Ballet. More than forty parents and kids boarded a bus in the middle of a snowstorm, dressed up for a special family event.

The Milwaukee Ballet has staged a crowd-pleasing production of The Nutcracker for decades, and it remains a holiday favorite for ballet fans and novices alike. For almost all who made this trip, it was a first-time exposure to ballet. "I liked the twirling and dancing!" said one excited seven year old. "I was surprised- it was much more interesting than I thought!" stated one young adult who helped chaperon the group.

Lynette Eubanks, Youth Services & Intergenerational Program Coordinator, was thrilled to share this exciting experience with the youth and their families.

After the ballet, the group enjoyed a healthy dinner at Beans and Barley on North Avenue. We are grateful to those who made this trip possible: Ms. Lynette, who organized it, our parents, who came with us, our group leaders from Agape, and the two grants that helped cover the costs. Our special holiday celebration was funded by two grants: Helen Bader Foundation Performing Arts grant and UNCOM Nutrition grant.

Too Much White Stuff?

Did you wake up this morning and think, "Oh, no... I have to shovel... AGAIN!"

Did you know there are young men and women in our neighborhood who would actually ENJOY shoveling your walk, driveway, and/or clearing your car?

The going prices for snow removal, where the worker provides his/her own equipment, are:

$12-$15 for just a driveway
$15-20 for a driveway and front walk and steps
$10 for a walkway along the front of your property or for just your front walk and front steps
$5 for digging out your car and clearing your windshield

Generally, if you're providing the snow shovel or snow blower and gas... then you pay $5 less.

Of course, if the snow is particularly deep (like it is in our picture!), expect to pay $5 to $7 more.

Many folks "hire" someone for the entire season... so any time there's more than, let's say, two inches of "White Stuff," the worker will shovel and get paid. You should work out other requirements (such as what time he/she should be there, whether you will pay by check or cash, etc.) ahead of time, too. Just so you know, most workers prefer being paid by cash as soon as the job is done.

Then, you can sit back and let a local entreprenuer take care of things!

OTHER BENEFITS?
1. You are investing in the workforce of the future. (Remember how YOU learned to be a good worker? You labored- quite possibly shoveling snow- when you were a teen or youth!)
2. You are saving your back and/or heart. You're also less likely to fall.
3. You are saving your time.
4. It's warmer in your house than on your walkway!
5. When young adults or teens are gainfully employed, they are learning and earning... and are also unlikely to be in trouble!

1. Ask a person on your block for a referral.
2. Ask a young person from your church.

Road Trip

Thurston Woods’s residents that were in opposition of the Flavors Super Club (formally Club Escape) obtaining a license to reopen under a different name, went to City Hall for a hearing before the License Committee. This was a successful road trip for the residents, because the club withdrew their request for the application. The Thurston Woods residents have nothing against positive entrepreneurship in their neighborhood, and they always welcome new and positive businesses in the area.

Community Advisory Board Celebrates

December was a month of Christmas celebrations at Agape! December 5, the Community Advisory Board, a community-based board of very active neighbors from the Agape Community Center neighborhoods, enjoyed a delicious pot-luck complete with hot dip, Sloppy Joes, healthy tuna salad, and amazing cakes and cookies, including cheese cake! Almost every one of the Community Advisory Board members attended this delicious feast celebrating Christmas in our community!
The eating and celebrating didn't stop there! On December 19, Agape's staff gathered for a holiday lunch. Then, at 4:00, the After School Program participants enjoyed a party with gifts, food, and a special guest! HO HO HO After supper, the Teen Scene members gathered to celebrate the season with holiday gifts, food, and lots of music.

On Saturday, December 20, our annual "Holiday Gift Shoppe" opened its doors to over 200 parents for a special treat. Parents shopped for gifts for their children. Janeen Boone and August Marie Wagner-Richardson, of our staff, created amazing gift wrap art work. GE Healthcare donated 18 brand new children's bicycles for the Holiday Gift Shoppe this year, helping eighteen parents and grandparents gift their toddlers and children with an amazing gift.

The Agape Community Center Youtube commercial is finally finished. After many hours of filming, editing and acting, "directors" Sr. Patrice Colletti and August-Marie Wagner-Richardson were able to turn every funny blooper into movie magic.

Special gratitude goes out to the students involved in making this commercial and to our new friends, from the Cardinal Stritch Nursing Program, Amanda and Audrey.

November 12, 2008: Health Fair

Every year, Agape Community Center partners with student nurses from Cardinal Stritch University, to put on a community Health Fair. Last year, the fair included booths where individuals could have their blood pressure checked, get tips on recipe substitution, taste healthy snacks, such as chocolate chip cookies made with apple sauce and a special Anti-Smoking booth created by the After-School Program kids.

DIY: Halloween Costumes

Family Fun Nights are all about uniting for an evening of fun. With family budgets being stretched as though they were rubber bands, Agape Community Center's Intergenerational Program provided another evening of crafting and learning.

On October 16th, Community Educator August-Marie Wagner-Richardson, showed parents and children how they could make elaborate costumes out of mostly free home items or low cost alternatives.

A few examples include, The Bumble Bee, Black Eyed Peas, Fairy(Child and Adult), and Fire Fighter.

80's Night Draws All Generations

On October 24th, over 40 participants danced their way into the doors of Agape Community Center to relive the 80's one more time. Party goers ranged in ages of 7 to 70 plus! The DJ spinned revolutionary tunes from the Beasty Boys to Carly Simon and a great time was had by all. Even our ever "too-cool-for-school" teens schimmied their way onto the dance floor and graced the audience with mildly tone deaf karaoke!

Who's Got Spirit?

The Spirit of Thurston Woods that’s who! Residents that live in the Thurston Woods Area have the spirit, and we know this by the flying of the American and Thurston Woods flags on houses, trees, and garages. The residents of Thurston Woods wanted to show the amount of pride and connection that they have in their neighborhood, so the flags were the perfect way to do that. Displaying the flags on different blocks throughout the Thurston Woods neighborhood will hopefully attract future homebuyers to the area and show that this will be a great place to call home. Spirit of Thurston Woods is a neighborhood pride project that was co- sponsored by the Helen Bader Foundation and the City of Milwaukee Neighborhood Improvement Development Corporation (NIDC) as a gift to the Thurston Woods neighborhood.

Neighbors Gather

Our 6th annual Neighborhood Festival (Sept. 20) featured music, dancing, clowns, and a chance to meet and spend time with neighbors. Kids enjoyed the games and activities, and teens from the neighborhood as well as adult volunteers representing the Community Advisory Board helped make the day a great one!

We counted about 150 neighbors (and about 15,000 yellow jackets/bees!) enjoying the sunny autumn afternoon. What a great way to celebrate our neighborhood!

What's Cookin'?

Pure deliciousness! Every Monday, from 4:30-5:50pm, kids from the After-School Program here at Agape Community Center dish up delectables that are filling, nutritious and made from scratch. Recipes this year have included Cinnamon Yogurt Dip and Apples, Spinach and Cheddar Quiche, Vegetarian Lasagna and Chicken Fajita Wraps.

Our kids take great pride in learning the history of the dish they are making. They also learn about food safety, temperatures, measurements and portion control. The workshops are taught by our Community Educator August-Marie Wagner-Richardson, who believes that the program is one small contribution to the fight against childhood obesity and malnutrition.

Do You Know Tae Kwon Do?

You may not know Tae Kwon Do, but the youth in the After School Program do. Tae Kwon Do is one of the new and exciting sessions being offered in the After School Program, it is held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30-4:30pm. Eddie L. Murphy is the instructor of this class, Mr. Murphy is a six degree black belt certified instructor, and is the owner of Murphy’s ATA Taekwondo Center. One of Mr. Murphy’s missions is to always strive to provide the best in quality of instruction, both physically and mentally.

He believes in teaching those physical techniques that prove to be most practical in our society and even more importantly, to mix American philosophical approach with our traditional way of instruction… to be respectful, courteous, honest, loyal, and persevering.

In learning Tae Kwon Do, the youth are developing primary goals on a daily basis, because it is necessary to develop a positive structure and pledge around which to build their character. The brains of youth emit good information when programmed properly. The alternative is “garbage in, garbage out”.

The youth think this is a cool class, not only do they have another gym class during the day, but they can learn different karate techniques that they can show off to their friends.

DISCO FEVER!!!

Platform shoes, polyester leisure suits and afros were in abandance at Agape Community Center on August 22nd during the Intergenerational Program's 70's Bash.

Neighbors of all ages sasheed down the Soul Train Line and boogied to some serious Disco Fever music.

The event was spear-headed by Intergenerational Program/Youth Services Coordinator Lynette Eubanks, who not only staged the event and promoted it, but also cooked all the scrumptious food any hippie's heart could desire.

As partiers worked up an appetite volunteer Russ Little kept the buffett tables stocked with spicey and mild chicken wings, veggie platters, homemade chocolate chip & oatmeal'n raisin cookes and many many more.

$3 or 3 canned goods were charged at the door, but participants proudly proclaimed to have gotten far more than their monies worth!

Winners of the Best Dressed Contest took home great prizes. Winners included Aziza of Milwaukee Theater in first place, Community Advisory Board members Robert Little and Adele McCrank in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Even when the night had to come to an end, and the DJ packed up his vinyls, the spirit of studio 64 stayed alive with lava lamps, strobe lights & disco ball as participants stayed behind to help clean up while they listened to more 70's hits on a authentic, working 8 Track (compliments of Fred Wagner-Richardson, father of Community Educator August-Marie Wagner-Richardson)

My first summer job was at Agape Community Center. I got a chance to experience different things here at Agape. For example, I got a chance to help with commodities that we do every month. For me to work at Agape is a true blessing.

Working here at Agape has made me want to strive more and set goals for myself and for my future.

A Special Place Called……..Agape

Agape Community Center is a very special place, because it does so much for the people in the neighborhood. One of the special things Agape does is an event called "Commodities" every month. In this event Agape gives out boxes of food to the local senior citizens in the neighborhood, which is a very sweet thing to do in my opinion. Agape Community Center also provides Community Meals every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights to the local people in the neighborhood. Another special event Agape does is have a day camp every summer for 8 weeks for children ages 4-14. While at the camp the kids have breakfast, lunch and snacks. They also go on variety fields trips, and they also have plenty of fun activities to do while their at camp. Agape Community Center does many more events, too many to name, but these events where just some of my favorites.

So you see, Agape Community Center is a very special place because it helps build the community up. Agape Community Center also has a very strong staff that is forever willing to help you at anytime. So when Dorothy said, “There's no place like home,” she really meant “There's no place like Agape!”

Thurston Woods Neighborhood Cleanup 2008

The Neighborhood Coordinator for the Thurston Woods area and the Agape Community Center has made a constant effort to get the community involve in keeping their neighborhood beautiful. We have had two cleanup events along with a thank you ceremony speaking on the effects of garbage on environment.

On April 12, 2008 Agape Community Center participated in the Great American Cleanup 2008. The weather turned out to be challenging with falling temperatures and rain. We still had a nice turnout with 23 participants picking up garbage in the Berryland Housing area and around their homes. The participants were youth from the Agape Community Center, residents of Thurston Woods, and neighbors that live in the Berryland Housing Project Complex. They were required to bring back a bag of garbage to the dumpster before they were able to receive food and a “Thank you coupons’ at our Thank You Reception. Overall it was a inspiring morning and we were encouraged by those who were willing to brave the elements to make a difference in their neighborhood.

On July 11, 2008 the Agape Community Center held another neighborhood cleanup with our summer camp participants and young men form probation and parole. Once again we were able to clean the Berryland Housing area and a large portion of the Thurston Woods community. It was a beautiful day as we were able to talk to some of the thankful neighbors and have a positive effect on the community. As the participants return from the hard work we rewarded them with the ‘Thank you coupons’ and a bar-b-que. Everyone had a good time and we are looking forward to the next cleanup this summer.

It's Here! Agape Publishes its First Book!

On July 17th, the Community Advisory Board (CAB) held a dinner and program celebrating another successful year with the Journey of Hope project and the culmination of their booklet, full of nutrition tips, information about the Community Advisory Board and healthy recipies donated by the CAB and modified by Mount Mary College Dietetics students.

The event which was emceed by Sharon Garrett, Co-investigator of the project, was very well attended and made even more special with the appearance of former Intergenerational Program/Special Events Coordinator Ms. Denise Wooten.

Coordination of the event went off without a hitch due to the talents of the CAB members, Ms. Lynette Eubanks (Intergenerational/Youth Services Program Coordinator), Sharon Garrett and Kasandra Tarkington (Family Liason).

The CAB members were each given awards for all their contributions to the project and the board itself along with a blue Agape Community Center polo shirt.

All of the participants of the event were given copies of the booklet in hope that they too would share the knowledge of healthy living and good nutrition.

Stretch Your Dollar at the Community Warehouse

As the summer home improvement season continues, people are looking for ways to make their hard-earned dollar do more for them. Agape Community Center has teamed up with the Community Warehouse with a program that might help. The Community Warehouse is a non-profit, faith-based provider set up to serve the people in the Milwaukee community with quality home and business improvement materials. These materials are made available for 75% less than the recommended retail value. To benefit from the saving a sponsorship from Agape and a small $25 membership is require. Signing up is easy:

Back on Dry Land!

Many readers of our blog have been asking how we are doing recuperating from our mid-June flood. The great news is, with the help of neighbors, friends, and donors, as well as the amazing participation of employees and volunteers, we are fully "back in business!"

"Flood week" was a challenge, but our staff and volunteers jumped in to lend a hand. The next two weeks were spent dealing with decontamination and removal of all the carpeting, as well as all the items that were waterlogged (furniture, books, papers, toys, materials, etc.). During these weeks, we were able to continue providing all programs and activities that did not require the basement; youth and teen programming was cancelled.

Once the basement was empty and decontaminated, we had to dry it out. Our friends and neighbors came to the rescue, sharing and loaning dehumidifiers and other equipment. Then, with the help of Walmart and also Von Briesen and Roper, SC, both carpeting and installation were donated! Soon, we were ready to move back in! Our volunteers, including our vets from Vet Central, and our employees (including our new summer youth staff) all pitched in to put things back together in time for the start of our summer day camp on June 30.

Miller Brewing Company, Ministry Health Care Corporate Headquarters, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, the Faye McBeath Foundation, and dozens of individual donors came to our rescue by donating emergency funds that allowed us to cover the expenses of clean up and decontamination. Their gifts also are helping us to replace materials, books, and teen/youth equipment that we had to discard due to the contaminents.

Our "Big Flood" at Agape Community Center was not what we'd planned on for June! But, looking back, we can see that it offered us many, many opportunities to truly count our blessings- especially the blessings of so many caring and committed people willing to do whatever it takes to keep Agape's community so vibrant and alive. We are truly grateful!

HealthWorks, Here We Come!

On June 20th, Youth participants will be attending a feildtrip to South Bend, Indiana where they will visit the famous HealthWorks Kids Museum.

Leaving the center at 8:30 am, they are expected to return by 6:30pm.

Teen Scene participants have volunteered to chaperon the event and will also be visiting a College Fair while in the city.

Flood Challenges but Does Not Defeat

Like most of Milwaukee, Agape Community Center received the "gift" of a flooded basement this past week. Monday morning, staff members and a team of volunteers worked to sort, salvage, toss, and mop. By Tuesday, we were ready for sopping carpeting to be removed, and all items that could be salvaged had been scrubbed with bleach and moved to a "clean zone" until the basement itself could be decontaminated from the flood waters. Youth and Teen services, which occur in the basement activity area, and computer lab activities, which occur in the now-wet and disassembled lab, were canceled until all repairs and reorganization could be completed. A special thanks to each Agape staff member, to our volunteers from Vets' Central, and to Russ. Each came to our rescue! We so appreciate it!! We estimate our damage total at between $12,000 and $24,000 at this time, but we look on the bright side. Everyone was safe... and everyone is working together as a team to help us as we recuperate!!

Miller Brewing Employees Lend a Hand

Miller has been one of Agape's partners for years, supporting youth programming through donations and grants, sponsoring a Community Meal night regularly, and each year sending a team of volunteers to do a hands-on project. This year, a team helped us to "deep clean" our kitchen and to paint an office. Afterwards, Development Director Al Luzi and Executive Director S. Patrice Colletti were invited over to Miller's corporate headquarters for a picnic. Miller Brewing friend Cheryl Fields, who has helped coordinate various activities that benefit our youth and teens, received a special award from Miller for her work with Agape! Congratulations, Cheryl! And, thanks Miller Brewing!!

Peanut Butter, Jelly, and...

During this past two weeks, nearly two dozen Agape Community Center families have helped restock the Emergency Food Pantry at Florist Ave. Lutheran Church! Volunteers and neighbors from nearby brought peanut butter and jelly, tuna fish, canned stew, and other nonperishables in response to FALC's call for help. We all chipped in, and before we knew it, we had two full carts of food! More comes in daily. We'll continue our food drive during the first few weeks in June, and then we'll do it again in late Summer. We can accept donations any time!

Healthy Family Meal & Games

Last Friday, a large group of Agape families joined together at Agape Community Center from 6-8pm for fabulous food, top-notch prizes, entertainment and games! In addition to a tasty and healthy meal featuring salmon (a great family recipe, too!), parents won excellent prizes: a George Foreman Grill, a blender, a Pop Lite Popcorn Maker, and a Crock-Pot. What better ways to create delicious and healthy meals at home!

Prizes for Kids/Teens included aTeen Beauty Gift Tote, plush toys, a water sling shot for safe summer fun, a badminton racket set, and four baseball sets. A family from our neighborhood also won the Family Grand Prize- a family "four-pack" of Brewers tickets!

Oneida Bingo Bus Trip Draws a Crowd!

May 17, a group of more than thirty neighbors from across our neighborhood joined together to bus up to Oneida Bingo for a day of gaming. This "adults only" trip offered Agape Community Center neighbors a chance to get to know others from the community, to share lunch together, and, of course, to try their hand at Bingo (and other games!)

Each of the thirty who came on the trip also had a chance to learn a bit more about activities in our neighborhood. Many met neighbors for the very first time. Why not plan on joining your neighbors for future trips to this and other possible destinations?

Planning for Tomorrow?

Members, neighbors, friends, Board members, and staff at Agape Community Center have begun an exciting planning process that looks ahead at our growth in the next five years!

The planning process began with a series of "Futures Interviews," where staff were asked to reflect on what they saw five years in our future.

The second phase, due to start next week, involves many different groups- teens, adults, staff, neighbors, friends- in "focus group" discussions where we'll listen to ideas and needs.

The third phase, in late June, and July, will involve a trained team of community members who will travel door-to-door around our neighborhoods to ask you to share your opinions. We're calling these "front porch interviews," although, of course, you won't really need a front porch to enjoy it!

Your input will help make our next five years even more exciting than our first twenty one!

Agape Community Center is committed to increasing the standard of living in the Thurston Woods Community. Along with our social endeavors, the Neighborhood Coordinator here at Agape has work with the community to find opportunities for them to make an investment in the neighborhood they live.

Our first Landlord Association Meeting was held on April 9th. Local property and home owners came together to discuss their concerns with the neighborhood and what can be done this summer.

A few topics of discussion were:

Garbage left behind as the snow thawed out
Potholes in the streets and when the City was going to fix them
Ability to report nuisance properties and speeding cars
The City of Milwaukee ticketing policies

The conversation was intense and suggestions were given to solve some of the problems. Yet, an individual can only do so much by themselves to affect their neighborhood. Together we can demand for the services that we deserve in the Thurston Woods Community. If you are a home or property owner in the Thurston Woods Community you are invited to our next Landlord Associations meeting. The next meeting will be announced soon, but if you have any questions feel free to call the Neighborhood Coordinator, Claudiare Motley, at 414-464-4440.

Also, the Thurston Woods Community will be holding a Block Watch Meeting on May 21st at the Agape Community Center. It will start at 6:30 pm and will include representatives from the District 4 police department. Keeping Milwaukee Beautiful

Despite the cold winds and rain, about 25 people showed up early Saturday morning on April 12th to help beautify the neighborhood by picking up trash and discussing over lunch the importance of keeping our neighborhoods litter-free. The event was co-sponsored byAgape Community Center's Neighborhood Coordinator Claudiare Motley, Community Education Program Coordinator August-Marie Wagner-Richardson, Teen & Young Adult Program Coordinator JC Hall and Safe & Sound Community Partner Aaron Edwards.

Walk the Mile

In effort to prevent the health-kick craze, that has been popping up all over the media, from becoming another flash in the trend pan, Agape Community Center has established their very own family-friendly "Walking Club". The club officially began April 21st and will continue every Monday and Wednesday from 2:30pm to 3:30 pm.

Women's Day Celebration a Huge Success

March was "International Women's Month," and Agape Community Center celebrated with its annual "Women's Day" celebration.

This year, we honored three local women who exemplify the abilities and commitment so common in our community. Ms. Brandie Wilks, owner of Wilks Property Management, Inc., Ms. Kimberly Motley, an attorney working in the State of Wisconsin Public Defenders Office, and Ms. Tamara Grisby, representing District 18 in the Wisconsin State Assembl, each received a special award.

In addition, this year we honored the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother, a group of Catholic sisters who founded Agape Community Center back in 1986. The Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother continue to be active supporters of Agape, and they serve as volunteers and significant donors. In fact, their financial support allows Agape Community Center to keep most of its programming free or low cost. Agape Community Center is grateful for the Sisters' ongoing support!

New Kid On the Block?

Agape Community welcomes Claudiare Motley to our neighborhood! Mr. Motley will serve as our Neighborhood Coordinator, focusing on continuing to build community and work with our Thurston Woods neighbors.

Claudiare picks up the reins from Ms. Brandie Wilks, who recently left Agape Community Center to start and grow her own business. Claudiare's leadership will help us continue to implement exciting block pride projects (if your Thurston Woods block is interested, give him a call at 464-4440, because there are matching funds available!). He'll also manage an expanding "Paint and Fix Up Program," which allows qualifying neighbors living in Thurston Woods to apply for small grants ($300-$800, typically) to cover costs of exterior home improvements.

We love to work with our Thurston Woods neighbors to keep our blocks looking great! You can look forward to a bunch more projects, including home-owner classes, "how to" classes, and a new print newsletter by and for the Thurston Woods neighborhood!

For the first time ever, Agape Community Center is working with local vocal artists to create a holiday music CD! All the proceeds from this unique project will go to help with costs for our Community Meal Program.

Sing for Your Supper is an innovative CD with fifteen holiday hits! Local talent, including Divine Savior Holy Angels High School, Marquette University High School, Nativity Jesuit and Notre Dame Middle Schools, All Saints Choir, the Milwaukee Choristers, Crossroads Presbyterian Church Bell Choir, and soloist Cheryl McCrary will brighten your holidays with: Rise Up Shepherd and Follow, Breath of Heaven, Everlasting Glory, Bethlehem Spiritual, We Three Kings, Silent Night (Spanish), O Holy Night, Ave Maria, Every Valley, and other traditional and contemporary favorites.

So far, we have pre-sold over 800 CDs. Our goal is to sell at least 1,000, because that will raise the $15,000 we need to cover the costs for our food program. The CDs are $15 each and, of course, they make great gifts. You can buy one or more online by going to:

October 29: Literacy Celebration!

This year, our youth and a bunch of our creative adults dressed as characters from their favorite books for our annual Literacy Day Celebration. We had a party, with wonderful food and treats, and then, before it got dark, we did a neighborhood parade to show off our costumes. Several parents joins us, as did our well-dressed staff members.

After the parade, the bravest among us went down to the Activity Room, where courageous teens and adults had built a "haunted house". Scary sounds, fog, and VERY scary decorations, plus an ample assortment of ghouls meant there was a LOT of screaming. For a while, no one could find Ms. August... until we figured out that the "witch" looked sort of familiar! Here are some pictures. Hopefully, you won't be too scared!

Sock Hop!

The members of the CAB, the "Community Advisory Board" successfully hosted a really fun "Sock Hop" featuring all generations of music and dance. It was open only to adults, and to teens invited by adults. A group of our Teen Scene members came and joined in several dances. They had ALMOST as much energy as the older folks! Some people came dressed in the style of their favorite era- 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s. Since the CAB is also responsible for implementing our "Journey of Hope" health project, they made sure there were ample healthy treats available for the night!

Youth Sewing Club Plans Big Project

Kids in working with Ms. Bonnie and our other Sewing Club volunteers are excited about a special service project they're doing. They are learning how to make blankets for babies who are in the the neonatal intensive care unit, as well as other sick babies in a local hospital. Ariana came up with the idea, and the entire Sewing Club thought it would be a really great and fun project. As soon as some of the blankets are done, we're going to put a photo here so you can see them!

Breast Cancer Awareness

We had a wonderful two-day Breast Cancer Awareness Project at Agape Community Center. On Day 1, guests could take in the exhibits and pick up plenty of free literature. Cardinal Stritch University's College of Nursing helped with some exhibits, and our own Denise Wooten coordinated several other displays. This is actually our third year hosting this event, and each year we get excellent participation and lots of interest. Almost everyone was wearing a pink ribbon!

On Day 2 of this special event, a group of women from the neighborhood gathered to talk frankly about breast cancer, and to commit to having an annual mammogram. Several breast cancer survivors, and their family members, shared their stories. Almost every single person in the room (about 25 people) had experiences of how cancer had touched their lives. There was a strength and a positive spirit among us, and we really appreciated the chance to be together in conversation.
